The story of Sean,Cheryl, Geoff and James is a complex one which, in part, allows our Government to do what they continue to do. To pretend its all been dealt with.
Each of these youngsters did nothing more than sign up to join the
army and each of them met their unexpected and violent death when they were shot and killed at the Deepcut Army Training Barracks in Surrey between 1995 and 2002.
Sean's death was immediately assumed by the Deepcut command to be a suicide. As a
result, his death was not properly investigated, with evidence being lost,
destroyed or simply ignored.
Were such a dereliction of duty to have
been a one-off event then we might all be more forgiving, but just 19 weeks
later Cheryl James died in similar circumstances and the Deepcut command DID EXACTLY THE SAME THING.
I have long believed that had Cheryl's death not been treated in the same disgraceful way as that of Sean Benton, then just maybe Geoff Gray and James Collinson would be alive today.
But, as we now know, the same thing happened again when Geoff died in September 2001 and incredibly for a fourth time, when James Collinson died in March 2002.
Had it not been for the tenacity and sheer courage of Geoff and James' families this story may never have been told but in 2002 the press got hold of it and finally the MOD had to do something.
Or did they?
What followed was a master class in delay, obfuscation and spin by the Blair Government, the Brown Government and
hypocritically now even by the coalition.
In the ten years since then each Government has been consistent in only one aspect of the scandal that is
Deepcut.
THEY HAVE ALWAYS REFUSED ANY INQUIRY INTO THE DEATHS.
Consequently not one single person or even authority has been brought to
account.
